The Color Guessing Game
March 24th, 2011
It’s finally here! The Color Guessing Game— where you can both test how quickly you can type out color names, and how imaginative you dare to be. Common color names are worth the least points, while rare and unorthodox “colors” will net you the most. Be as creative as you dare; if your guessed color is not found, assign it to a swatch at the end of the game so that it can be added!
I sincerely hope you enjoy this audiovisual experience, a product of the collaboration with the talented Caught in a Dream, who concocted its exhilarating beats.
Excellent game, Nolith. I really dig it, every aspect. It’s much cooler than xkcd’s color experiment from yester-year. ; )
Ahh, you know, I was a little confused about color assignation. I don’t know if there’s a way to skip a color – like if you had a typo or wouldn’t be able to choose from among the colors on the screen. As a result, I think I ended up assigning a bunch of colors to “brown.”
Good work, and great music. : )
Hey Ryan,
Thanks for the feedback! Can you link me to xkcd’s color experiment? I am not familiar with it.
Thanks again,
Ebyan
Those are some phat tracks, dawg. I like how it flows. skipping some type-o colors would be nice in the assignment piece as mentioned above. And you don’t have chartreuse. 😉 Some more control buttons for after the game is over (like stop playing, high scores, …etc) would be cool too.
Anyway, I like how it flows. The music goes with it really well (kinda like Bejeweled 2).
Word.
Looks like the xkcd color experiment is offline, but it basically just let you name colors ad infinitum. He eventually compiled the results with some funny commentary here:

Love the game, man! Nifty idea. I seem to not know many “appropriate” names for colors, but it was fun trying to find out which one I did know, and which ones I was pulling out of my highney. Great work, man!
@LordTakuban I have some items in the wish list for a possible update, including a high scores list (possibly tied to Facebook), a music on/off button, etc. Glad you enjoyed the music!
@Ryan It looks like the original survey page is offline, but the results look like a useful, and amusing, resource. Thanks for that. 🙂
@Benjamin Similar to what xkcd found in his color survey, misspelled colors are more common than you’d think! If you enter a color that is not recognized, assign it to a swatch at the end of the game, and I will be able to add it.
Thanks for the support and feedback!
Interesting concept, but a tough game. Would be cool if you could use the mouse to look around and see adjacent/distance colours when you run out of ideas!
Earlier versions of the game allowed you to click around, as in “assign!” mode, as you request. This feature was removed, however, after feedback noting that it made the game confusing for first-time players.
Interesting that you should point out otherwise! I will keep this in mind.
